A collaboration between writer/director Mojisola Adebayo and choreographer/dancer Mamela Nyamza at Artscape, South Africa. This project tackles the alarming phenomenon of hate rape in current South Africa. The design materials used became integral in shaping the narrative and visual concepts. The set, a partially burnt out shack was built out of recycled wood. The piece shifts between two parallel worlds that seamlessly entwine: the murder scene and the wedding. The design was shaped by subject matter, context and resources available, whilst bearing in mind and accommodating internationally diverse audiences.
This project was selected as part of the World Stage Design Exhibition, 2013.
